It tastes spicy tangy and warm with a light smoky flavor from the cooked kimchi. People in Korea enjoy this dish because it is quick easy and very satisfying. It is perfect for lunch dinner or a late night meal.

What Is Kimchi Fried Rice

Kimchi fried rice is made with

  • cooked rice
  • kimchi
  • vegetables
  • gochujang chilli paste
  • egg

It has a spicy tangy and slightly smoky taste.


Ingredients You Will Need

For the Fried Rice

  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 1 cup chopped kimchi
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon gochujang Korean chilli paste
  • Half teaspoon salt
  • Half teaspoon pepper
  • Half cup chopped spring onion

For Topping

  • 1 fried egg
  • A little sesame seeds optional

Step by Step Method to Make Kimchi Fried Rice

Step 1

Cook the Onion and Kimchi

  1. Heat oil in a pan.
  2. Add chopped onion.
  3. Cook for two minutes.
  4. Add chopped kimchi.
  5. Cook for three to four minutes until kimchi becomes soft and lightly smoky.

Step 2

Add Rice and Seasoning

  1. Add cooked rice to the pan.
  2. Mix gently.
  3. Add soy sauce.
  4. Add gochujang.
  5. Add salt and pepper.
  6. Mix well on medium heat.

The rice should turn light red and smell spicy and tangy.


Step 3

Add Spring Onion

  1. Add chopped spring onion.
  2. Mix gently and switch off the heat.

Step 4

Prepare the Egg

  1. Fry one egg in a pan.
  2. Keep the yolk soft if you like soft egg style.

Serve and Enjoy

Serve kimchi fried rice hot with

  • soft fried egg on top
  • sesame seeds
  • extra kimchi
  • simple salad
