Creamy Indian Coconut Chutney With Fresh Flavor And Soft Texture

Coconut Chutney is a famous South Indian side dish served with idli dosa vada upma and many more breakfast items. It has a creamy smooth texture and a fresh taste from coconut and green chilli. The chutney is easy to make and takes only a few minutes. It gives a cool soothing flavor that balances spicy South Indian dishes very well.

What Is Coconut Chutney

Coconut chutney is made with

  • fresh coconut
  • roasted gram or chana dal
  • green chilli
  • ginger
  • salt
  • curd or water

It is blended until smooth and sometimes tempered with spices.


Ingredients You Will Need

For the Chutney

  • 1 cup fresh coconut pieces
  • 2 tablespoons roasted gram chana dal
  • 1 green chilli
  • A small piece ginger
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons curd optional
  • Water as needed

For Tempering optional

  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • Half teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 4 curry leaves
  • 1 dry red chilli

Step by Step Method to Make Coconut Chutney

Step 1

Blend the Chutney

  1. Add coconut chana dal green chilli ginger salt and curd to a blender.
  2. Add a little water.
  3. Blend until smooth.
  4. Add more water if you want thinner chutney.

The chutney should look creamy white and soft.


Step 2

Temper the Chutney Optional

  1. Heat a small pan with oil.
  2. Add mustard seeds.
  3. Add curry leaves and dry red chilli.
  4. Pour this on top of the chutney.

Tempering adds more flavor but the chutney tastes good even without it.


Serve and Enjoy

Serve the chutney fresh with

  • idli
  • dosa
  • vada
  • upma
  • uttapam

It tastes cool creamy and very refreshing.
