What Is Japanese Miso Soup

Miso soup is made with

  • miso paste
  • tofu
  • seaweed
  • spring onion
  • Japanese broth called dashi

The soup is quick healthy and full of natural flavor.


Ingredients You Will Need

For the Broth

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon dashi powder or veg broth

For the Soup

  • 1 tablespoon miso paste
  • Half cup soft tofu cut into small cubes
  • 1 tablespoon dried seaweed
  • 1 spring onion chopped

Step by Step Method to Make Miso Soup

Step 1

Prepare the Broth

  1. Heat water in a pot.
  2. Add dashi powder or vegetable broth.
  3. Mix well and let it come to a light boil.

Step 2

Add Tofu and Seaweed

  1. Add soft tofu pieces.
  2. Add dried seaweed.
  3. Cook on low heat for two minutes.

The seaweed becomes soft and gives flavor to the broth.


Step 3

Add the Miso Paste

  1. Turn off the heat.
  2. Take a spoonful of broth in a small bowl.
  3. Mix miso paste into it until smooth.
  4. Add this mix back into the pot.
  5. Stir gently.

Miso paste should never be boiled because it loses flavor.


Step 4

Add Spring Onion

  1. Add chopped spring onion on top.
  2. Mix gently.
